"A" MEETING 1st November 1999 VIDEO EVENING - FARADAY LECTURES

"B" MEETING 15th November 1999 INFORMAL GATHERING AND TECHNICAL CHINWAG

Dear Members

Hello, for our "A" meeting this month we need your help in choosing what is screened i.e. we need you active feedback please, details in next section.

In the meantime I am writing this newsletter some 3-weeks into the extension building. The local council building control officer demanded that we had 1.6M deep concrete footings! I thought we were only building a single storey but apparently it's something to do with the ground conditions (sticky London clay) and the surrounding trees - I have a conifer some 10m away and no more than 10m high!

Still the shape of the extension is now taking with the blocks having reached the height of the damp proof course which at the far end is some 4feet off the ground (my back garden is relatively low!)

NEXT MEETING:

"A" Meeting Monday 1st Nov 1999

VIDEO EVENING - FARADAY LECTURES

The IEE Faraday Lecture was founded in 1942 by the Council of the Institution, its object being "to interest the general public in electricity, to make the Institution more widely known and pay tribute to the memory of Michael Faraday".

Every year since (the exception of the war years) an eminent electrical engineer has given a lecture on some aspect of electrical science and technology, designed particularly the interest the informed layman. The lecture is now usually undertaken by a major organisation with a team of six to eight and support staff.

The IEE encourages the video recording of the lectures and we fortunate on Monday 1st November to have some made available to us for showing by Peter Burton G3ZPB.

We will have time during this Monday "A" meeting evening to see two excellent lectures. The first is entitled "The Digital World" presented by the University of Kent for the 1998/99 lecture. "As the end of the millennium approaches, the merging technologies of communications and computing are bringing about a revolution in everyday life. The familiar mobile phone, CD player and fax machines are being joined by digital broadcast radio and TV offering many more channels and much clearer sound and pictures.

"But why is the digital transmission of information, be it sound or pictures, so much better than the earlier forms of analogue transmission? How does it work and what does it mean for you and me?

"By tracing the development of the telephone from it's humble beginnings, based on the discoveries of Faraday, to the development of modern global telecommunications networks, this lecture explains the basic principles of digital communications and how the present systems operate. It will show how the talented engineers of today are working together to develop the systems of the future which will be part of our lives in the brave new Digital World."

For the second lecture we have a choice between "Making Waves" presented by Cellnet/Motorola for the 1994/95 lecture; and "But what's the use of it Mr Faraday?" presented by the University of Sheffield for the 1996/97 lecture.

"Making Waves explains how the goal of affordable, reliable, widely-available mobile communications has been achieved - telling the story of this technology that enables us to keep in touch while we're on the move - at home and abroad. It's about the way different technologies (telecommunications, radio and computing) have come together. Crucially, it's about the relationship between what's technically possible and what makes economic sense. Its starting point is Michael Faraday's realisation that electricity, magnetism and light might be linked. And how Hertz, Marconi and others demonstrated in practice that radio waves could be transmitted through space.

"But what's the use of it Mr Faraday? covers what do personal stereos, credit cards and modern medicine have in common and who made them possible? This lecture demonstrates the idea of electromagnetism and show how it is used in a variety of ways in medicine, industry, commerce and leisure."

What would you like to see for the second video? "Making Waves" or "But what's the use of it Mr Faraday?" Your advance views would be helpful; either by E-mail or telephone to me - thanks - see front page for contact details. We could also show the remaining video on the "B" meeting.

LAST MEETING

"A" Meeting Monday 4th Oct 1999

Autumn Surplus Equipment Sale

I am always surprised at this meeting just what items attract the bids, and those that don't! This Sale was no different and despite a smaller audience than in the past we were lucky to have amongst our midst our welcomed and valued buyers who ensured that an excellent sum was raised for both the sellers and for Club Funds - thank you. The donation to the Club was in the order of £200, which is an excellent outcome. Our subscription covers the normal running expenses of the Club, but it is the proceeds from the two Sales a year that stops the Hon. Treasurer asking for a Sub increase.

For the Sale we were selling equipment from the estate of the late Dixie Deane G4FQQ, as well donated equipment and that of some Club Members who were selling. At the end of the meeting we had quite a lot of equipment to carry down the stairs and this will no doubt appear at the forthcoming CATS Bazaar on the 21st Nov 1999. Maurice G4DDY will be setting up a table as usual. For more details see the article below.

The club thanks the Sale top table in the form of Bernie G8TB and Maurice G4DDY as auctioneer and goods distributor; and Peter G3ZPB in control of finances (with me helping!).

MAPLIN - Croydon Store

We have noted that this new store is located on the corner of London Road and Station Road, West Croydon. (This was the old Pets Corner shop that opened for a short while i.e. 166 North End). This makes it very convenient for those able to travel by public transport to West Croydon, either by Train, Bus or the soon to open Tramlink (those though coming from the East will have to travel round the loop to the Tram-stop in Station Road.

Checking with Maplin the store opens on Saturday 30th October with special offers and will have the telephone number of 020-8686 6081.

WANTED by Gareth G4XAT

Gareth has E-Mailed me saying how he really enjoyed the junk sale. However he needs to track down some info and/or spares on some of the "wise purchases" he had made!

1 Gareth is seeking information (original application and circuit diagrams etc) on a Type 126 Aerial Tuning Unit, ref. no 10D1673. (Photo: ATUquest) Also a male plug to feed RF in, similar in size to a PL259 joiner. (Photo: ww2plug). The roller coaster measures 1/2 a microhenry to 100 microhenry, no wonder they were popular on the surplus market!

2 Seeking application info, such as whip length, frequency of operation etc for an Aerial loading unit type 51, Ref no 10B/16025, and also a right angle plug to feed the RF into this device too. (rtangleplug)

3 Does anyone have application notes for the pair of conduction cooled 4cx250's that I bought, and could the vendor, if he/she is reading this, confirm if they were in GWO before I spend 100's of hours building them into a water-cooled design? PLEASE!

(2): rtangleplug (3): Cooled 4cx250's

4 Finally could anyone help with the microphone pin-out (pin-in?) on a KW2000A transceiver? It is a 3 pin DIN but not obvious from fiddling about. I have a nice Shure 444 to go with it just as soon as I can get the connections. Also, anyone know how the KW Q multiplier if used or connected? Anyone got a manual?

If anyone can help with the above, please phone Gareth Evans, G4XAT, evenings or weekends on 0181-462 2837 to sort out photocopying or loan/collection etc. Thanks a lot in advance.

MEMBERS NEWS & ACTIVITIES

John Simkins G8IYS

John has E-Mailed me earlier this month which I reproduce here:

"Now properly QRV on Six metres from IO91XI (450 ft ASL) since 30 September (one letter away from the VHF Field day site in XH). Have bought Alinco DX70TH (100W on 50 MHz) and completed the building of a 4-ele wide-spaced 6-metre Yagi - which is up on the end of my house. Boom is 4.5m long. The visual impact is a bit striking, particularly so when I haven't had an antenna since I moved QTH 18 years ago. Worked TZ9VV (Mali) last night, he was 5&9+20. He gave me 5&9.

Who else in the club is up on 6? I know Barry G4STD has been from time to time, but all my local contacts have been in Essex and Suffolk. Other than the African QSO, best DX has been Louth in Lincolnshire and Cardigan Bay. Interesting being back on the air after a gap of 18 years. Perhaps someone has knowledge of the origins of the bloopers and bleepers to be found between 50.0 MHz and 50.5 MHz. Look forward to working some locals."

Thanks John and hopefully you will get to work some "locals". The bleepers and bloopers I think you will find are the beacons. My 6M set up is out of action at the moment due to the extension work. John's E-Mail address is: johns@stenet.org.uk.

Ted Jones G3EUE

Thanks Ted for your latest letter to me which are always welcomed. Inside were two photographs.

The first is of Rex (G3KGA) and Mary Morrison taken at the recent Golden Wedding party. This is not full faced but nevertheless a record of two more good friends present at the recent Golden Wedding party.

This second photograph is one of Ted taken in Tasmania to show that there is life away from Amateur Radio - yes, the trout was edible and went very nicely with a few chips!

Thanks Ted, I shall be returning these and the earlier ones you kindly sent me to ensure that they are replaced in the album.

Norman Maddock G2AJS

Bernie G8TB has advised me of the sad news that Norman has recently died aged 90+. He was an old Club member and was a Science Master at Caterham School. Here he introduced several pupils to Amateur radio including Andrew Smith G3IAS.
