SPRING SURPLUS SALE

INFORMAL GATHERING AND TECHNICAL CHINWAG.

***************************************************************************

Dear Members,

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

I HEREBY GIVE NOTICE that the Annual General Meeting of the SRCC will be held on Monday 12th April at the clubroom 7.30 for 8.00pm. Following our usual practice this notice is over a month ahead, but this is to comply with club rules, and also allows time if there are any proposed alterations to the rules, or to give you an opportunity to raise any points at the AGM, the committee would like notice of important ones. We also ask for nominations for committee, such nominations (and acceptances) must be received by the committee prior to the opening of the AGM. With the next newsletter I will include the minutes of the last AGM, the full agenda and also a nomination slip for a new committee and also for a new secretary (nominated separately) as I will not be standing for reselection for that position this coming year. I also hope to include the accounts up to 31st January, as at the last AGM the club's financial year was changed to finish on that date each year.

NEXT MEETING. SURPLUS SALE 1ST MARCH

We hope there will be a good turnout for this MARCH SALE, when members can bring along items for sale and also items to be donated to the club. In the past we have had quite large amounts to donated gear, but there is not so much this year which should encourage members to bring along their gear. As at the last sale we have decided to start with member's items first, but to do this you must be in the clubroom well before 8 o'clock, and no boxes of "rubbish" please. All members and visitors they have brought along must sign the attendance book and all must be conversant with the rules. Note that the club accepts no responsibility for goods sold at this private sale, and the purchasers buy on the understanding that they are capable of determining the usability, fitness for purpose and SAFETY of goods obtained.

1. Only SRCC members are permitted to sell.

2. All items not donated must be marked with the name or callsign of vendor.

3. Bids should be in steps of 5p up to £1 and 2Sp thereafter.

4. Visitors are welcome but must be introduced by a member who is responsible for informing them of the rules.

5. All members and VISITORS must sign the attendance book.

6. Sellers will not be paid until all buyers have settled up.

7. The club levies 15% on all transactions.

8. Please try and arrive early so that we can start by 8 o' c.

9. PLEASE KEEP THE DOORWAY CLEAR FOR FIRE PRECAUTIONS.

10. SMOKERS are requested to keep to the rear of the room.

LAST MEETING. THE HISTORY OF EDDYSTONE RECEIVERS - GRAHAM MARSHALL G3RJW.

As far as I can remember, this is only the second talk that Graham has given to the club but he presented this one in a way that kept the audience interested the whole way through. He started by describing how he became interested in Eddystone and then went on to describe the history of the firm from the very earliest beginning when they were making hair-pins and powder puffs, through to their last production. Sadly they are now out of business as their latest project, Digital Radio, fell through. Graham brought along five receivers, which is about half the total he has, and sheer weight prevented him bringing more along. One receiver is, as far as is known, is the only one in existence. He went on to describe the problems in keeping the old sets operating, with the replacement of components and the type of design of the drive cord arrangements. Several were connected and we were able to check the performance and also the fact that they were operational. Altogether a very interesting ev ening Graham, and the whole committee wish me to present their thanks.

KING HUSSEIN BIN TALAL OF JORDEN

There have been many illustrious people embracing our hobby of Amateur Radio, but few have had more standing than Hussein, as he was known on the air, and many have been privileged to contact him over the years. There will be many, more fitting than I, who will pay tribute and detail his many accomplishments, both in world politics and as an amateur, all I can say is that it is very sad that we will not hear JYl on the amateur bands again.

CLUB DINNER SATURDAY 20th MARCH

So far some 28 places have been booked and as we are limited to about 30 those of you who have not applied had better do so quickly. This is the last newsletter before then so contact Ray Howells G4FFY, 9 Aultone Way, Sutton, SM1 3LD (0181-644 7589) or at a club meeting. All the details were in the last Newsletter and please let Ray know your preferences from the menu. Please make cheques payable to Ray Howells @ £13.50 a head.

HILTON O'HEFFERNAN G5BY

Last September George, G5BZ gave us a talk about the life of G5BY. We showed then the ARRL Cup given to Hilton and we have arranged with G5BZ and the RSGB to re-dedicate this cup to be presented to the winners of the Mix and Match section of VHF NFD, which we won last year. As a point of history the SRCC presented the "SURREY CUP" to the RSGB in 1970, as we had just won VHFNFD, which is the main cup presented for the overall winner of that event. We hope to show the cup again at our AGM but the RSGB will not receive it for some weeks, as we have to have it engraved and also to have a trophy case made.

INCIDENTALLY I had a very nice card from George this morning and he is having a whale of a time in ZL and VK and has driven some 41/2 thousand miles! Most days in South Australia its 90o. He sends his regards to all and will see many of you at the club dinner on the 20th March.

USED POSTAGE STAMPS

As you would expect after the rush of Christmas Mail I have received some bumper packets of stamps for which very many thanks, these are very much appreciated by the Diamond riding school for the disabled. But that is no excuse for you to stop collecting, so more bumper packets please.

ADVERTISING DOES PAY

We were very pleased to have received a 70 cm crossed Yagi from G3FP that we will put on the mast at the Terra Nova. In the last newsletter I appealed for cable for this and ft shows that members do read it because our good friend Robin Sykes of Syon trading came up trumps providing the necessary and so we can now go ahead with the installation. Very many thanks Robin.

INCIDENTALLY talking of reading the newsletter, I am glad to say that the lead, that I advertised as missing has now turned up.

E-MAIL ADDRESSES

Ray G4FFY is at present contemplating making a new enlarged membership list and he would like those of you possessing E-mail addresses to let him have them. He would also like to know if you have any objections to E-mail details being printed in address lists, or on the SRCC WEB home page, etc. We would like a response as soon as possible as it is delaying the preparation of the new list.

You can of course E-mail him at ray.howells@btinternet.com or g3src@btinternet.com

CLUB VISITS

We are proposing to have another club visit to Bletchley Park and I understand that a new Colossus has been constructed and is up and working. We are proposing some time in May and indications of support would be appreciated.

Also we understand that there is an exhibition of radio equipment run by the REME This is at Reading, visits are by appointment only, If there is enough interest we will go ahead and find out further details.

THINKING DAY ON THE AIR

We had been asked to put a station on the air at the Belmont School using the call GB2BBG on the weekend 20/21 February. Gareth G4XAT had agreed to do this on the Saturday afternoon, when he would have been able to erect his "quick erecting" masts and antennas. In the end however GlEAM, who was organising the event, cancelled it, as she did not have sufficient support to make it a viable operation.

SIGNING OFF

As I have already made clear, I will NOT be standing for secretary for the forthcoming year. As yet we have had no nominations for this post but there will be no question of my having my arm-twisted! So it is up to you to find another member who will take on this post, and to this end there is a nomination form for you to fill in with the nominees agreement to stand. And with that happy thought I wish you
