TERRA NOVA, 34 THE WALDRONS, SOUTH CROYDON ************************************************************************************************* "A" MEETING 5th JULY 1999 SUMMER BARBECUE QTHR G3ZPB "B" MEETING 19th JULY 1999 INFORMAL GATHERING AND TECHNICAL CHINWAG |

Dear Members
Hello again, I am writing this at the start of Wimbledon fortnight following a glorious weekend (ignoring the rain first thing Sunday morning). Hopefully more summer is to come as we have the VHF NFD weekend to come and the Summer Barbecue at Peter's G3ZPB, which leads me to:
NEXT MEETING:
SUMMER BARBECUE AT POUND COTTAGE - QTHR G3ZPB
5th July 1999
Once again this will be held by the kind offices of Peter and Wendy Burton on Monday 5th July, and PLEASE NOTE, this meeting will not be held at our usual venue at the Terra Nova, unless the weather is so terrible as to stop outdoor activities, it's no fun cooking in the rain! Time 7.30 for 8 pm at Pound Cottage, 202 Coulsdon Road, Old Coulsdon. Going north it is on the right hand side and the first house after the new estate past Stoneyfield Road, with a bowling club almost opposite.
Members should bring their own meat (sausages, chops, hamburgers, fish etc) as the salad, bread and soft drinks will be provided by Peter and Wendy. So that they can provide sufficient quantities it would be appreciated that those of you planning to come to contact them in advance (Tel: 01737-551413 or E-Mail: pburton@iee.org).
The barbies will also be supplied with Peter and Graham being the cooks once again. If you require alcohol please bring your own.
This is planned as a FAMILY AFFAIR so bring the XYL and the little ones! All you have to do is to turn up and pray for good weather. If you are in any doubt please ring 01737-551413 after 5 pm.
Entertainment will be laid on like Table Tennis or Pool or Snooker, plus if dry enough to allow grass cutting then Lawn Croquet will also be possible, Peter and Wendy do have a large garden.
In the past years this has been an excellent evening... it also gives the XYLs a chance to get together and swap news.
VHF NFD Weekend
3rd-4th July 1999
This weekend sees this annual contest which to many is the radio event of the year. We cannot emphasise too much how important it is to have as many members of the SRCC partaking in this event. For those of you who have not attended in the past please have a word with Bernie G8TB (020-8 660 7517) or any other committee member who will soon put you in the picture. We need OPERATORS, CHECK LOGGERS AND HELPERS. The start of the contest is from 14:00Z on Saturday to 14:00Z on Sunday 3rd/4th July.
We commence setting up the four stations (70Mhz, 144MHz, 70cms and 23cms) early on Saturday morning, and we would welcome help in erecting the antennas, the tents, fitting up gear, running cables etc. We came 1st last year in the Mix and Match Section and it would be good to achieve again this year, especially as we have loaned the G5BY cup to be awarded by the RSGB for the winner in this section.
We still need more operators and check operators and if helping out on the hectic 2M station is not your cup of tea why not try the 4M, 70cm or 23cm stations which are more leisurely.
This is a fun weekend and you do not have to remain on site for the whole time, an hour or two would be very welcomed.
The site is on the West Side of the B269 about one mile south of the Slines Oak Road. The entrance gate is next to an isolated house with a rough lay-by. As you drive onto the site we plan to lay out the stations in a U-shape with all cars to drive up the middle. A rope will mark out the boundary edge in order to protect the cabling and guys, etc. Will you please keep within the roped-off as they have been occasions when cars have ripped up our telephone cables.
It is planned to start at around 9:30am on Saturday 3rd July and your help will be appreciated. It's a nice time out in the fresh air, so do make an effort to put in an appearance - thanks.
CATS Inter-Club QUIZ
12th July 1999
This is the last reminder of this event that will take place on Monday 12th July 1999 at St. Swithuns Church Hall, Grovelands Road, Purley. This is your invitation so just turn up at 7.45pm. Teams of four from each Club are made up on the spot. Several SRCC members have participated in the past and it is always a very amusing evening. As in all these quizzes it is a question of luck as to what question you happen to know, but then there is the rest of the team! JUST TURN UP and ENJOY YOURSELF.
LAST MEETING:
DIGITAL VIDEO BROADCASTING
7th June 1999 - Peter G3ZPB
This was an excellently presented talk by Peter G3ZPB which covered the current analogue TV system; why digital; digital transmission coding: MPEG-2 standard and COFDM modulation (makes it virtually immune to multi-path signal problems); the Terrestrial DVB system; Digital TV advantages; Spectrum planning and Sharing; Interference issues and a Live Demonstration.
A lot was learnt about the balance between the commercial constraints and Digital TV performance e.g. channel bit-rates. Peter is to be congratulated on his excellent efforts including the live demonstration; the expensive test gear he brought along to demonstrate the increased interference immunity compared to analogue TV, and his high quality presentation.
The talk he gave us is apparently a cut-down version from an all day seminar that is normally given. It was interesting to learn that the BBC Digital Teletext service has now started BUT our Set-Top Boxes need a software update to receive it - this is not available yet.Why digital - well it is less susceptible to noise, interference and distortion; efficient use of the spectrum; better quality audio and video with true Wide-screen (no wasted transmission of black lines!). Peter demonstrated that whereas an analogue signal starts suffering interference when the interfering signal is 20dB below the wanted, for digital the interfering signal needs to be 20dB above the wanted before it has an impact. Mind you the threshold is very steep and you don't need much more interference signal before the wanted signal freezes. To my calculation that gives a possible improvement of 40dB BUT the digital TV is actually transmitted 20dB down compared to analogue (Crystal Palace), with some "multiplexes" even lower.
I noted that analogue PAL TV is planned to be phased out in 10-15 years, closure of which will provide yet more spectrum for digital TV. That will mean an end to those old TV's unless partnered with a Set-top Box. Thank you Peter for an excellent evening and many thanks for all the effort you put in and bringing along all that equipment. It was a pity that it was not enjoyed by more than the 17 that came - we must do better in supporting these meetings and the efforts that speaker put in.

LONDON-BRIGHTON BIKE RIDE -
20th June 1999 - Gareth Evans G4XAT
HE MADE IT!
On Sunday morning (20th June 1999) Gareth, G4XAT left Clapham Common at 0650 astride his push bike in eager (?) anticipation of the 58 miles to follow. The weather was ideal, not sunny and although it had rained recently, exactly as the forecast promised for once, it stayed dry for most of the run. The route is a fairly tortuous amble through the suburbs of South London involving Mitcham Common, Carshalton Pond and then up through Woodmansterne where the first opportunity to refresh or relieve oneself occurs. The route progresses through Chipstead Valley (past the Rising Sun) and heads off through the country to Merstham and then Nutfield Marsh.
At this point there is the first hill of consequence but as the (bike) traffic had thinned out by then it was not a problem. About 20 miles on the Speedo so far…. Much of the route is closed to conventional traffic and this makes it much nicer to cycle. The route progresses through Crawley Down and so to Turners Hill. This was an effort last year but Gareth's training regime must have paid off as it too passed without much pain. Shortly after Turners Hill he caught up with the rain and after a couple of miles was thinking of stopping to change into a Black bin bag, thoughtfully modified with two arm holes and a neck hole. However, the road ahead seemed brighter so he carried on. Within minutes it had stopped raining and became noticeably warmer. No need for the bin bag after all!
The route then meanders through some lovely countryside (but by now he had lost his bearings!) and after passing a road called ‘Slugwash Lane’ ended up in Ditchling Village. By now you can see the Beacon rising before you, and when he met it for the first time last year Gareth had got off and pushed after 20 yards. However, forewarned is forearmed so he took a very gentle ride up to the base and then…..just carried on going!
Members who have ridden in recent years may well be familiar with mountain bikes compared with the ‘racer’ of years gone by. Very low gearing on these bikes makes it possible to scale what would ordinarily be just too much work. Taking advantage of this fact and a bit of hard hill training in the weeks running up to the event paid off. Although Gareth was breathing like Puffing Billy by the time he reached the top he had made it in one and at slightly greater than walking pace too. ‘Elation’ best describes how Gareth was feeling and he vaguely remembers the view at the top as he refilled with liquid.
The ride then moves out across the top of the downs and crosses the A27 bypass. This bit is worth all the work in getting that far. There is a lovely sweeping hill down onto the coastal Lewes Road, and he clocked 45 mph freewheeling down it this year. A wonderful reward for all the hard work getting up there in the first place. The last three miles or so is a gentle ride into the centre of Brighton (coming out near the Royal Pavilion) and then down to the seafront for the finish in Maidera Drive. As you approach the finish the crowds cheer you over, a fantastic feeling after 5 hours and 5 minutes in the saddle. The Speedo told Gareth that the average speed was 11.2 mph that he believes was better than last year.
He also didn't feel quite as devastated as last year and went down on to the beach to meet his family and work colleagues and to enjoy some very special triple decker bacon, cheese, mustard and brown sauce sandwiches, washed down with a bottle or two of decent beer. Just then the sun came out and a very pleasant afternoon was enjoyed before departing for home.
Gareth wishes to thank all those who have sponsored him, he will be eagerly collecting the funds as soon as he sees you! All proceeds go the British Heart Foundation and last year £1.83 Million was raised. Next year he may have 10 metres (SSB!) with him and will try to work the world en-route!
Many thanks Gareth for this piece and WELL DONE.
VINTAGE MILITARY AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY -
Hon. Sec. Howard Aspinall G3RXH
Ted Jones sent me a letter the other day enclosing a brief write up from Radio Bygones about a new ARS entitled "Vintage & Military Amateur Radio Society" which I copy below:
We are delighted to announce the formation of a new NATIONAL amateur radio society the Vintage and Military ARS.
Non profit making, democratic and specially for the licensed radio amateur, short wave listener and all those interested in collecting and restoring old radio communications equipment, the Vintage and Military ARS has been formed to cater for this important growing special interest niche;
Concentrating on ex military wireless, vintage commercial and home made amateur radio communications equipment, especially valve gear, and ancillary equipment plus the preservation and continued use of traditional modes including amplitude modulation within the amateur bands. If you have any interest in these, this new society is a must, providing:
A regular newsletter sent to all members with descriptive, informative and technical articles on old radio coms gear, and also incorporating a specialist exchange, for sale and wanted ads section for members;
An exchange between members of information about equipment restoration, modification, setting up and use;
Technical help, advice and assistance to members;
Organised nets on the amateur bands for people wishing to set up, test and operate ex military and vintage radio communications equipment;
Displays and demonstrations of ex military and vintage radio communications gear.
Keeping an eye on national and international regulatory trends and when necessary making representations to government agencies and/or co-operating with other national societies to ensure the continued licensed use of old radio coms gear within the amateur bands.
Also, if there is sufficient interest, in the future providing a valuation service for vintage radio communication equipment

Howard wrote the following to Ted:
"We had the inaugural meeting at Bletchley Park on 29th May and things are looking good. It was an interesting and lively meeting held in an appropriate setting, and we are now sorting through matters which arose at that meeting, like membership forms and the constitution. It was agreed that subs for UK members should be a tenner, with all subs becoming due on 1 January of each year with a 50% discount for new members joining after the first six months of a year, from July onwards.
You should soon be getting some more information from our Newsletter Editor, but please accept our apologies for the apparent slowness in contacting you. The response from interested people has been most encouraging, but the volume of enquiries has meant a temporary overload which will be overcome very quickly now."
Thank you Ted for this interesting piece.
MEMBERS NEWS & ACTIVITIES
Roger G8HDP - METEOSAT
I have received the following E-Mail from Roger G8HDP which starts what will be, I hope, a regular column of members activities.
"Just a quick comment to let you know I am now able to receive weather fax data from geostationary satellites. The system uses a 90cm dish into at Martelec MSC30 down converter, followed by a Martelec MSR40 Satellite Receiver the output of which is decoded by a Time Step PROsat for windows interface. The resulting data is sent to a 266MHz Pentium II computer running NT4 over a serial interface. The resulting pictures are amazing. Just got to resolve a slight noise problem and all will be going fine.
This seem just a bit over the top just to find out what the weather is like outside when I could find out by looking through the window.
Regards Roger Jenkins G8HDP"

In the last month I have added a few more members E-Mail details and external site links, the latest being Bletchley Park which I got from Peter G3ZPB's WEB pages. I hope shortly to place the Club History on the site, most of it is now scanned in and now need to convert it to HTML, etc.
If you do visit the site I would appreciate an entry in the Guestbook with your views - thanks.
