RON GLAISHER, G6LX (proposed July 2001 RadCom Obituary)

The world of amateur radio has lost another of its pioneers with the death on Saturday 12 May of Ron Glaisher, G6LX, aged 81. He started his amateur radio involvement as BRS2357 in 1936 before becoming 2BFL. After the second World War, he became briefly G2BFL, before assuming his more-familiar callsign of G6LX in 1946.

Starting his working life with F C Heayberd, manufacturers of rectifiers and battery chargers, he later joined the Air Ministry as a civilian radio technician after the outbreak of war, at the Kidbrooke radar unit. Afterwards, he worked with Peter Pennell, G2PL, at the firm Electronic Transmission Equipment. Following this, he then contributed to the work of Mullard, Solartron, Elliott Brothers and Ardente, eventually setting up his own company, Communication Technology.

Ron spent nine years as Chairman of the IARU Region 1 Contest Sub-Group and, in 1996, received the Region 1 Medal for his work. He also spent many years on the RSGB HF Contests Committee. He was also member of the RSGB IARU committee and in 1999 was made an Honorary Vice-President of the Society.

He was a member of the Surrey Radio Contact Club (SRCC) for over 50 years; the partnership of G6LX and G3BFP organised the Croydon Group-SRCC National Field Day station, outright winner of the NFD Trophy in 1967 and 1971- 73, achieving the highest score on 15m on 17 occasions.

During remission of his illness in 2000, he spent a holiday in Cyprus, seizing the opportunity to operate as 5B4/G6LX. He was dedicated to our hobby, never too busy to offer help when it was needed. He will be sadly missed.

August 1999 - Presentation of RSGB Life Vice-Presidency

A special Club meeting was held back in August 1999 when Ron was conferred with a Life Vice Presidency of the RSGB by the then president Hilary Clayton-Smith G4JKS. She presented Ron with a plaque and badge.

This is the highest honour conferred by the RSGB and recognised the long service that Ron had afforded to the Amateur Radio hobby and to the RSGB, and in particular his hard work for Region 1 IARU exceeding some 55 years.

Tributes received by Hon. Sec.

Dear Ray,

Thank you for passing on this sad news. Because of Ron's position as Vice-President and his work on the RSGB IARU Committee, I would like to publish an obituary in the July RadCom. I'd be grateful, therefore, if you could forward me some suitable biographical details and - if possible - a photo of Ron. If you are unable to do so, perhaps you may know someone who could provide this information?

Regards,

What a sad end to a very nice day, I have only met Ron on about 4 occasions, I heard several  excellent talks by him at the SRCC club, and read many articles by him. and read of his contributions to Amateur radio in Radcom. He was quite a character and will be a sad loss to all who knew him. I send my condolences to his wife and family. He leaves a space both in the club and the radio fraternity that will be very hard to fill.

Thank you for letting us know. Alan G7ELG

Ray - very sorry to learn of Ron's death.  I presume someone will inform RSGB and will not assume that it's already been done ?

Have driven past his house several times in the last 3 days - I've always envied him his aerial farm and would hate to see it go ! !

Very sad indeed to hear about Ron G6LX.

As a small contribution, my recollection of him is that in spite of the high level work he did, he still had time for individuals.  I knew him and counted him as a friend, but particularly I remember how kind and encouraging he was to harmonic, Nick, when he first appeared on air at age 15.  It made a big difference.

Having known Ron for some 45 years as well as working for him prior to my retirement in 1989 it is indeed a sad loss.

His interest in amateur radio was phenomenal, as was his technical knowledge, whilst his help to the RSGB serving on the Contest committee for many years, etc., was of great benefit.

He will be sadly missed and we send our sympathies to his wife Prue.

I have many memories of Ron going back many years. In the fifties we used to go on car rallies in his Sunbeam Talbot, often ending up in darkest Hampshire having endured driving tests, crossing fords and numerous other hazards. Sometimes we won.

I remember when he and I went to Hay Hill in Wales somewhere and took part in 2m field day operating from his Ford V8 Estate Car and the best DX was GI2FHN which I believe won us a high place on the listings.

Hazel, Sally and I holidayed in Guernsey very many years ago and I took my car with its 2m radio. To our astonishment we found ourselves working GU6LX not a million miles away from where we were staying.  I had bought one of those two string aerobatic kites, which we introduced to Ron.  He was hopeless!!  Probably due to all the laughter. HF Field Days were our happiest memories...our daughter, Sally, still talks about them. They were great social occasions with a lot of wives and children also enjoying themselves. Many were the times when we would be sitting around in the evenings, off duty and chatting and suddenly realised things had gone all quiet....yes the generator had stopped.!! All hands to the pumps then.

Hope your current contacts from up there Ron, are all DX
